Sovereign Technology Solutions for Humans

Empowering people through technology since 1998 — based in Nelson, BC, serving the Kootenays and the world.

Who We Are

Avatar Computer & Technology has been transforming the way individuals, families, and organizations relate to technology since our founding in Nelson in 1998. What began as a tech-support shop evolved in 2007 into a full Supertech operation focused on training and empowerment, and today stands as a dedicated Sovereign Technology Solutions practice — a rare combination of hands-on repair shop, ethical IT consultancy, education studio, and community digital-infrastructure builder.

We grew almost entirely by word of mouth across the West Kootenay because we do something most computer shops do not: we treat technology as a relationship rather than a product. We meet you where you are — whether that is a slow laptop, a confusing office printer setup, an aging Mac that won't update, or a question about a phone that has started to feel a bit too smart for its own good.

What follows is a tour of what we actually do, starting with the everyday repair and consulting work that makes up most of our days, and gradually moving into the more specialized infrastructure, privacy, and sovereignty work that sets us apart.

Part One — The Everyday Work

The bread and butter of what happens in the shop and on house calls.

Radical Upgrades & Hardware Revival

This is the headline service that brings most people through our door, and the one we are most proud of.

A "slow old computer" is almost never actually old. It is almost always a perfectly capable machine being suffocated by a worn-out mechanical hard drive, insufficient memory, an overheating fan caked in dust, and an operating system buried under years of bloat. With a focused upgrade — typically a solid-state drive, a RAM expansion, thermal repaste and fan service, and a clean modern operating system — we routinely return five-to-tenfold real-world performance to laptops and desktops that clients were ready to send to the landfill.

We use the best eco-hacking tools available — modern NVMe and SATA SSDs, high-quality memory, current cloning and migration utilities, and clean, optimized OS images — to bring forgotten machines back to life.

Reviving PCs as far back as 2004

We routinely rescue desktops and laptops dating back two decades and turn them into clean, capable, daily-driver machines. Depending on the client's needs and comfort level, those revivals run on:

  • Windows 11 Pro, properly installed with telemetry, Recall, advertising IDs, Cortana, and bundled spyware removed at the system level — a clean, fast, respectful version of Windows that is becoming harder and harder to get from the manufacturers themselves.

  • Linux, in client-friendly forms — Zorin OS for clients coming from Windows who want a familiar feel, Ubuntu for general-purpose use, Linux Mint for stability and simplicity, or other distributions where the use case calls for it.

In almost every case, the upgraded older machine is faster, quieter, and more responsive than the budget new computer the client was about to buy — at a fraction of the cost and without sending a perfectly good piece of hardware to the landfill.

Reviving Macs as far back as 2009

Apple stops supporting its own hardware long before that hardware actually stops being useful. We routinely take Macs from 2009 and onward and bring them up to the latest supported macOS (using current patching tools where Apple has dropped official support) along with:

  • Maximum supported RAM — often the largest single jump in real-world responsiveness.

  • Faster, modern memory where the board allows.

  • Solid-state drive upgrades — the single biggest performance transformation possible on these machines.

  • Battery service, fan and thermal service, and port repairs as needed.

A 2012 MacBook Pro that felt unusable on its original drive becomes a fast, modern, fully patched workstation again — for a fraction of the cost of replacement.

In-Office Speed-Ups & Disposal Prevention

We come into your office, your studio, or your shop and make the computers you already own work faster.

In the vast majority of cases, the upgrade is a small fraction of the cost of new computers — and the upgraded machines meet or exceed the performance of the new ones the client was being quoted. We have prevented the unnecessary disposal of countless workstations, laptops, and servers across the Kootenays simply by doing the diagnostic work that the big-box stores no longer have time for.

A typical office visit might include:

  • Diagnosing why everything feels slow (it is almost never the internet)

  • Targeted SSD, RAM, and thermal upgrades on the staff workstations that need them

  • A clean-up pass on browsers, startup items, and notification chaos

  • A faster, calmer, better-organized desktop environment for everyone

  • A clear written report: what was upgraded, what was left alone, and why

The goal is simple: save the client money, keep good hardware out of the waste stream, and remove the daily friction that is silently eating staff productivity.

Repairs & Diagnostics

Standard, careful repair work for laptops, desktops, and Macs, including:

  • Screen, keyboard, trackpad, and battery replacements

  • Liquid-damage assessment and recovery

  • Power, charging, and port repairs

  • Fan, heat-sink, and thermal service

  • Storage diagnostics and data recovery from failing or failed drives

  • Boot, startup, and OS repair

  • Virus, malware, and unwanted-software removal

  • Clean, properly-configured OS reinstallation

Every repair comes with a clear explanation of what was wrong, what we did, and how to keep it healthy.

Computer Feng Shui

A clean digital workspace is as important as a clean physical one — and almost no one is taught how to build one.

We optimize your desktop, dock, browser, file system, and notification settings for low-stress, ergonomic, focus-friendly workflows. The result is a computer that helps you think instead of fragmenting your attention. Most clients are surprised by how much faster their actual day-to-day work becomes after this kind of session, even on a machine they have used for years.

Training & Support

Every client interaction is also a teaching opportunity — and we offer dedicated training as a service in its own right, in person and remotely.

One-on-one and small-group training, customized to your real workflow and your real questions, covering:

  • Computer fundamentals and confidence-building

  • Spreadsheets, word processing, and desktop publishing

  • Operating systems — Windows, macOS, and Linux — at any level

  • Advanced file navigation and organization

  • Email management, including escape strategies from cluttered, abusive inboxes

  • Security and backup protocols you can actually understand

  • Office 365 and other productivity suites

  • Research skills, fact-checking, and source evaluation

  • Computer maintenance you can do yourself

School and office training programs are available for staff and student groups, with simple written documentation provided so the learning sticks after we leave.

Remote support is available worldwide via secure remote-access tools — the same quality of service we offer in person, anywhere with an internet connection.

Cloud Support & Training

Cloud is where most modern offices and households now live, and where most people feel most lost. We help.

  • Setup and configuration of OneDrive, Google Drive, iCloud, and Dropbox for clients on those platforms.

  • Office 365 / Microsoft 365 comprehensive setup and management for businesses, schools, and non-profits — OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint, Exchange, and admin tooling, including non-profit eligibility paperwork where it applies.

  • Google Workspace support for clients whose workflows genuinely need it.

  • Sync, sharing, and permissions training so cloud folders actually work the way you expect them to.

  • Cross-device file access — the right files on the right devices at the right times, without surprises.

  • Migration between cloud platforms — including consolidation when you have ended up with files scattered across four different clouds.

  • Backup verification — most people have never actually tested whether their cloud backup would let them recover their files. We test it.

For clients who want to step away from the big cloud platforms entirely, we also offer the self-hosted alternatives discussed later in this document.

Robust, Privacy-Respecting Backups

We design backup systems that actually run automatically and that you can actually restore from — tested, not theoretical.

This means combinations of local backups (so a restore is fast), off-site backups (so a fire or theft does not wipe out your life), and encrypted cloud backups (so a single failure cannot take everything down). For businesses and creative professionals, we add scheduled testing so the backup is verified working at intervals — not just assumed.

Personalized Technology Solutions

Every setup begins with a real conversation about how you actually work, what frustrates you, and what you wish your tech could do for you. The recommendation comes from there — not from a stock checklist.

This includes Mac migrations and cross-platform moves between macOS, Windows, and Linux, with all your data, mail, photos, and contacts intact, and operating system choice based on what the client genuinely needs and is comfortable with rather than whatever the manufacturer pre-installed.

Part Two — Networks, Storage, Builds & Specialized Hardware

The next layer of services for clients who want more than a single working laptop.

High-Performance Networking

Clean, hardwired, properly-mapped networks with managed switches, VLANs where appropriate, and Wi-Fi only where Wi-Fi belongs.

  • Ultra-fast internet configurations and equipment that routinely deliver speeds well beyond the standard 300–600 Mbps marketed by providers — often exposing a substantial gap between what you are paying for and what you are actually capable of receiving.

  • EMF-efficient zones — workspace designs that minimize electromagnetic field exposure where it matters, with wired desks, intentional Wi-Fi placement, and EMF-quiet zones for staff who want them.

  • Mesh, range-extender, and bridging solutions for properties where wiring is not practical.

  • Network diagrams and documentation so future maintenance does not require reverse-engineering.

Ergonomic Multi-Monitor Workstations

Two-, three-, and four-display setups configured for actual productivity rather than visual impression. Includes proper height, distance, lighting, and dock or KVM configuration where laptops are involved.

VOIP & Conferencing

Easy-to-use, reliable VOIP and video-conferencing systems for distributed teams, hybrid offices, and home-based businesses — including ethical alternatives to Zoom and Google Meet for clients who want them.

Custom-Built Performance Computers

We design and build high-performance computers tailored to specific creative, professional, and recreational workflows. Wherever possible, we build with the client, turning each system into a hands-on education in components, thermals, software, and long-term maintenance.

  • High-end gaming rigs — collaboratively assembled as a learning experience.

  • Video editing and color workstations — fast scratch storage, calibrated displays, GPU acceleration tuned for DaVinci Resolve, Premiere, or Final Cut.

  • 3D, CAD, and design workstations for Blender, Fusion 360, AutoCAD, Houdini, and similar workloads.

  • Audio production systems — quiet thermals, low-latency interfaces, Pro Tools / Reaper / Ableton optimization.

  • Live performance rigs — reliability-first builds for stage and venue use.

  • Backup, server, and security systems purpose-built for data protection rather than improvised from leftover parts.

Affordable Complete Systems

Starting at $450 CAD, our base systems include a Quad Core i7 processor, 16 GB RAM, and Radeon graphics, pre-installed with Ubuntu, Zorin OS, or Windows 11 Pro (with telemetry and Recall removed). Upgrade paths include 64 GB RAM, 4 TB NVMe SSDs, and quad-monitor-capable workstation, gaming, or multimedia GPUs. Ideal for office, creative, and home-business use without the surveillance baggage.

NAS & Network-Attached Storage

For clients who need serious local storage for video editing, archives, multi-device sync, or shared office files, we deploy Synology, Unraid, TrueNAS Scale, and other NAS platforms — including multi-server cooperative deployments across the region.

A typical NAS deployment includes:

  • Proper 10 GbE networking for video-editing and large-file workflows

  • Dual NVMe SSD caching for hot files

  • RAID 5/6-equivalent redundancy for drive-failure protection

  • Off-site replication to a second physical location

  • Encrypted remote access to your local files from anywhere — without handing your data to a third party

  • Snapshots for accidental-deletion and ransomware recovery

High-End Theatre & Spatial Sound

Immersive home-theatre design with modern Dolby Atmos and DTS:X-capable systems, properly room-corrected, with attention to acoustics, lighting, and source quality.

Personal Cloud & Media Streaming

Self-hosted alternatives to Netflix, Spotify, iCloud, and Google Photos — Plex, Jellyfin, Navidrome, Immich, Nextcloud — running on your hardware in your home, accessible from anywhere, with no subscriptions and no surveillance.

Privacy Phones & Mobile Sovereignty

Smartphones are the single most invasive technology most people own. For clients who want their phone back, we install and configure privacy-respecting mobile operating systems on compatible hardware:

  • GrapheneOS installations on supported Google Pixel devices — currently the strongest privacy-and-security mobile OS available.

  • LineageOS and /e/OS installations on compatible Samsung, Motorola, and other Android devices for clients whose hardware is not Pixel-compatible.

  • Fairphone procurement and setup for clients who want ethical hardware to match the ethical OS.

  • De-Googling, app-replacement, and migration coaching so the new phone actually works for your real life, not just in theory.

  • Anonymous SIM and number strategies for clients with elevated privacy needs.

  • Dumb-phone consultations for clients ready to step further off the smartphone treadmill.

Heritage Media & VHS Digitization

We rescue family memories, community history, and creative archives from dying analog formats before the tapes degrade past recovery:

  • VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, Video8, Digital8, MiniDV digitization to modern, archival-grade formats.

  • Audio cassette and reel-to-reel capture.

  • Photo, slide, and negative scanning for personal and organizational archives.

  • Digital archive organization with proper metadata, redundancy, and family-friendly browsing — so the digitized files are actually findable and usable, not just dumped on a hard drive.

High-Resolution Security Camera Systems

4K and higher wired and wireless security camera systems with local recording and no mandatory cloud subscription. Properly configured for genuine privacy and security rather than the always-online, always-uploading surveillance most off-the-shelf cameras default to.

Privacy-Focused Smart Home

Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, and open-source platforms (Home Assistant) compliant with PIPEDA — completely free of Amazon, Google, Apple, and Meta ecosystems. Smart home capability without the smart-home surveillance.

Custom Office Documentation

For business clients, we produce custom staff technology manuals, troubleshooting playbooks, onboarding guides, network diagrams, and password-management systems — so the knowledge of how your office runs lives in your office, not in one person's head.

Part Three — Data Sovereignty & The Deeper Work

For clients ready to take their digital lives back, we offer something most computer shops simply do not: a clear, practical path out of the surveillance economy.

This is where Avatar's twenty-five-plus years of experience compound. The work below builds on every service in the previous two sections.

What We Mean by Data Sovereignty

Your data belongs to you. Your communications, your files, your calendar, your photos, your contacts, your reading history, your location history, your health information, your relationships, your work — all of it. None of it should be silently mined, profiled, sold, or used to train systems whose existence depends on knowing more about you than you know about yourself.

The default arrangement of modern technology assumes the opposite. Sovereign technology is the alternative: tools, platforms, and operating systems that respect you as the owner of your digital life.

We help clients build that alternative — gradually, practically, and at whatever pace suits them. There is no all-or-nothing requirement. Some clients want a single privacy-respecting laptop. Others want a fully self-hosted household or organization. We meet people where they are.

Privacy-Respecting Operating Systems, Revisited

The Windows 11 and Linux installations described in Part One are not just performance upgrades — they are sovereignty upgrades. A clean Linux install, or a properly de-bloated Windows 11 with telemetry removed, is the foundation of every other privacy gain a client can make. Without it, every later step is built on quicksand.

For clients ready to go further, we offer:

  • Pure Linux household and business setups across the family of distributions

  • Hardened Linux configurations for higher-threat-model use cases

  • Encrypted-disk and encrypted-home-folder setups

  • Local-only AI tooling for clients who want the productivity of modern AI without sending their data to remote servers

Self-Hosted Cloud & Communications

For clients ready to leave the big cloud platforms entirely, we deploy and support production-grade alternatives — the same tools we run for ourselves and for our community partners.

  • Nextcloud — file sync, sharing, calendars, contacts, collaborative documents, and office-suite editing. A full sovereign alternative to Google Drive, Dropbox, and Microsoft 365 for clients who want one.

  • Matrix / Element — end-to-end encrypted group and direct messaging. A genuine sovereign alternative to Slack, WhatsApp, Discord, and Teams, with the option to bridge Signal groups for clients who need to bring their existing communities along.

  • Jitsi Meet — video conferencing without accounts, tracking, or surveillance.

  • Self-hosted email with proper deliverability, anti-spam, and aliasing — so your address is yours, not the platform's.

  • Git hosting for code, documents, and version-controlled writing.

  • Custom community social networks using Open Source Social Network (OSSN) and the Matrix Protocol — comparable to private community platforms like FLFE.social, giving cooperatives, schools, spiritual communities, and organizations their own decentralized digital homes.

Community Cloud — The Kootenay Lightweb

For clients who want sovereignty without running their own server, Avatar is a hands-on partner in the Kootenay Lightweb — community-owned, federated, sovereign digital infrastructure for the West Kootenay region and beyond.

The Lightweb provides shared, properly-maintained instances of the tools above (Nextcloud, Matrix, Jitsi, mail, Git) for households, organizations, and individuals across the region. We help clients onboard, migrate from existing platforms, and integrate the Lightweb into their daily workflows.

For clients with more modest or more specific needs, we deploy single-instance servers tailored to a single household, business, or community.

Digital Wellness

The default relationship between humans and modern technology is exhausting, addictive, and quietly extractive — by design.

Drawing on the work of researchers and thinkers like Jonathan Haidt, Shoshana Zuboff, and Tristan Harris, we help individuals, families, and organizations design technology environments that support attention, sleep, focus, and presence rather than fragmenting them. This includes:

  • Notification and home-screen audits on phones, tablets, and computers

  • Family device frameworks and screen-time structures that actually work

  • Focus environments — distraction-free configurations on the devices people use for deep work

  • Dumb-phone and minimal-phone consultations for clients ready to step out of the smartphone economy

  • Office digital-wellness programs for businesses concerned about the toll modern tools are taking on staff

  • EMF-conscious home and office design for clients sensitive to wireless exposure

Workshops, Talks & Group Education

We regularly run workshops and presentations across the Kootenays for community organizations, schools, festivals, and private groups, including:

  • Be Your Own Bank — a comprehensive, beginner-friendly workshop on cryptocurrency self-custody, hardware wallets, seed-phrase hygiene, and avoiding the scams that target this space.

  • Digital Wellness for Families & Adults — practical sessions on attention, addiction, family device culture, and rebuilding healthy boundaries with technology.

  • AI Literacy & Practical AI for Working Professionals — demystifying current AI tools and walking through real workflows for writers, artists, business owners, and educators.

  • Privacy Phones & Digital Sovereignty — companion talks to our published writing, covering GrapheneOS, ethical hardware, and anonymous mobile strategies.

  • Vintage & Heritage Computing Demonstrations — showcasing Commodore 64s, Amigas, and early networked computing alongside modern decentralized technology, especially for youth audiences.

  • Office productivity training — long-running classroom programs covering spreadsheets, documents, file navigation, cloud integration, email, research, and security/backup protocols, for schools and offices alike.

Mindful, Intentional Technology Use

Underneath every service we offer is a single conviction: technology should serve the human being using it. Not the other way around.

For some clients that means a faster laptop. For others it means a federated community cloud, a privacy phone, and a household-wide step away from the surveillance economy. For most it means something in between, arrived at gradually over months or years of working together.

Whatever the scale, the principle is the same. Your time, your attention, your data, and your relationships are yours. We help you keep them that way.

Community Commitment

We have proudly supported a wide range of Kootenay businesses, cooperatives, and community organizations over the past two and a half decades, including FLFE — Focused Life Force Energy, Kootenay Kids Society, Kutenai Art Therapy Institute, Slocan Integral Forestry Cooperative, Valhalla Wilderness Society, Kootenay Career Development Society, Silverking Soya Foods, Kootenay Woodstoves, Scout Clothing, Cartolina, Gaia Rising, Lynch Building Inspections, and Lightstream Productions, among many others. We are particularly committed to supporting local non-profits, cooperatives, schools, healing-arts practitioners, and ecologically minded businesses across the region.

Why Choose Avatar

Most computer shops fix the symptom, charge the invoice, and move on. After more than twenty-five years in the Kootenays, we still believe technology should serve the human being using it — and we are willing to do the slower, more thoughtful, more educational work that this belief requires.

We will tell you when an upgrade is the better answer than a replacement. We will tell you when stepping back from a piece of technology is the better answer than upgrading it. We will explain what we did, why we did it, and how to keep it working. And when you are ready to take ownership of your data, your communications, and your attention, we will be there for that work too.

If that is the kind of relationship you want with your technology, we would be glad to work with you.
